ACADEMIC HONESTY

Honesty is a compelling principle by which we operate all aspects of student and school life. Academic honesty is highly valued at CHS.

Students do not cheat, nor should they tolerate other students who do. Therefore, students will not receive credit for work that is not their own. Disciplinary sanctions will be administered for cheating on any school assignment or for plagiarizing (the use of material produced by someone else without acknowledging its source). Cheating is defined as an attempt to earn credit or receive a grade for major course work (tests, quizzes, assignments involving computer discs, major projects, and major essays) in a manner other than defined as acceptable by the teacher.

Because of the serious nature of academic honesty, violations of this code will result in loss of credit for the assignment with a recorded failing grade. It can possibly entail removal from the course with a failing grade and/or additional appropriate disciplinary action. Cheating is not acceptable.

ALCOHOL/DRUGS/WEAPONS

Chimacum High School is a drug/alcohol/tobacco/gun/weapon free zone. Chimacum High School enforces a zero tolerance policy. Lookalike products are subject to this policy as well. Chimacum High School utilizes a breath wand to check for use of alcohol by students as circumstances warrant.

APPROPRIATE DRESS

In view of the positive correlation between student dress, student behavior, and academic achievement, Chimacum High School has adopted the following policy: Student dress that is a health or safety hazard, damaging to school property, or creates a material and/or substantial disruption of the educational process shall be regulated. In addition, the following guidelines have been adopted by way of example. The administration reserves the right to restrict other clothing as well. CHS will not allow:

1. Clothing that is revealing in nature. Guidelines: Sleeveless shirt straps must be three fingers wide and the neckline may not be low cut. Boys’ and girls’ shorts must not be shorter than the tips of the fingers. Low cut pants and bare midriffs are not allowed.

2. Underwear as outerwear. Keep underwear covered.

3. Any slogan or insignia that implies intimidation, graffiti, discrimination, or ridicule.

4. Any display of words, pictures, or references to alcohol, tobacco, illegal substances, weapons, guns, or sexual innuendo.

5. Any article of clothing that has excessive rips, tears, or holes.

6. Spiked apparel (bracelets, necklaces, around hat, etc).

7. Other items as deemed inappropriate.

Consequences for non-compliance with the dress code are as follows:

1. Warning to cover up.

2. Notification of parent.

3. Student sent home for willful defiance of dress code.

Students at Chimacum High School are expected to dress in good taste at all times. Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times.

ASSEMBLIES/PROGRAMS

Assemblies are provided for the students’ benefit. They are part of the regular curriculum day and are treated as a class period. It is expected that all students will attend assemblies. All other areas of the campus will be off-limits during assemblies.

Programs will be held in the gym or auditorium during the school year. CHS audiences are cooperative, interested, and polite.

When you come to a program, concert, assembly, etc., the presenters deserve your courteous attention. Appropriate applause is clapping. Unless directed to do so, shouting, whistling, or feet stomping is inappropriate. Students are expected to stand and remove hats during the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem. When in the auditorium, students are expected to follow established behavior expectations for performing arts activities.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

While in attendance at school-related functions, students are expected to exhibit behaviors that are conducive to learning and to be respectful of all others.

Students will respond immediately to all reasonable requests from staff. Students who use profane, abusive, and/or obscene language and/or gestures toward school personnel will receive immediate consequences.

Students do not have the right to interfere with the learning of others, nor do students have the right to make others uncomfortable through the use of intimidation, harassment, assaultive behaviors, or inappropriate language while on school grounds or at school-related activities.

BUILDING HOURS

The commons area is open from 7:00am-3:00pm each school day. Students may not be in the commons prior to 7:00am or after 3:00pm without direct adult supervision. The commons will close at 1pm on early release days. Commons hours are subject to change.

CHEERLEADERS

Chimacum High School has both fall and winter cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are selected in May of the previous school year. Cheerleaders are chosen on the basis of tryouts, staff recommendations, poster contests, participation in pep assemblies, GPA, citizenship, and school attendance.

During the season the cheerleaders are expected to participate in pep assemblies, lead the crowd in home and away contests, and be positive role models around school.

Cheerleaders have the same eligibility requirements as varsity athletes. Please see the Extracurricular Eligibility Procedures section, beginning on page 26.

COMMON COURTESY EXPECTATIONS

· Spitting: Because of the potential health concerns related to the spread of germs, students/adults are asked not to “spit.”

· Clean-up: It is expected that students and adults alike clean up after themselves. This includes the commons, library, and workroom.

· Tables/desks/chairs: We ask that tables and desks are not sat on and that all chairs be used appropriately. This is for the students’ safety.

· Food/Drinks: Other than bottled water, no food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

· Punctuality: Being on time and ready to work is a life skill. We expect all students to be prepared and punctual.

· Profanity: The use of profanity on school grounds is not acceptable and is subject to discipline consequences.

· Respect: Treat others as you wish to be treated - with dignity and respect at all times.

COMMONS

The commons is open before school, during class changes, during lunch, and for a limited time following school. Students are expected to maintain the area where they are eating. Eating is permitted in the commons only. No food is to be consumed in hallways or carpeted areas. Students who do not bus or clean their own tables will be asked to stay after lunch and help clean the commons. Anyone throwing objects, food or otherwise, in the commons will be subject to disciplinary action.

DANCES

Dances are held periodically during the school year. Dances are for high school students only. Once a student enters the dance, they will not be allowed to leave and re-enter. Dances will be chaperoned by adults. Students may not bring food or drinks purchased elsewhere to the dance. All school policies apply to dances. Non-CHS high school students must have a guest pass to attend dances. Guest passes can be obtained for graduates from the previous year. Please see the Guest Pass form in the high school office for more guidelines.

ELECTRONIC VANDALISM

Students at CHS have access to many forms of technology. The use of technology is viewed as a privilege at CHS; therefore, any misuse, tampering, altering of systems, reprogramming, or theft of technology will not be tolerated. Any student involved in electronic vandalism will be subject to loss of technology privileges, school discipline consequences, and/or police notification if deemed appropriate.

Students may not place any program on CHS computers or network without prior administrative approval. Written materials placed on school computers must have prior administrative approval.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

Each student’s file has phone numbers listed for emergency contact. If a student is ill or an emergency occurs, we may find it impossible to notify parents/guardians without accurate data. It is therefore vital that the school is promptly notified when changes occur regarding address and phone numbers.

FIGHTING/BATTERY

Fighting or physical assault is prohibited at school and school events. A student involved in such action will be suspended from school, parents will be contacted, and law enforcement authorities may be notified.

If a student chooses to defend himself/herself with the use of force, he/she can expect to receive consequences. The school does not condone the use of violence.

FLOWER/BALLOON DELIVERY

Delivery of flowers/gifts is accepted on behalf of students by the CHS main office. Students will be notified of the delivery and students may pick up items at lunch or after school.

GANG-RELATED BEHAVIOR

In an effort to assure a safe, secure learning environment and to foster an attitude of respect for the rights of others, Chimacum High School has adopted a zero tolerance policy on gang-related behaviors and prohibits such behavior at school, during school-related functions on or off campus, and on any other school district property.

The following behaviors are expressly prohibited:

· Wearing, possessing, using, distributing, displaying, or selling any clothing, jewelry, emblems, badges, nicknames, symbols, signs, graffiti, or other items that could be evidence of membership in or affiliation with a gang.

· Committing any act or using any speech, either verbal or nonverbal (gestures, handshakes, etc.), which might indicate membership or affiliation with a gang.

· Using any speech or committing any act which might further the interest of any gang or gang activity.

· Soliciting and/or initiating others for membership in any gang.

· Requesting any person to pay for protection or otherwise intimidating or threatening any person.

· Committing any illegal act or violation of school district policies.

· Inciting other students to act with physical violence upon another person.

· Engaging with others in intimidating, fighting, assaulting, or threatening to assault others.

GRADES

Report cards are mailed home approximately ten days following the end of each trimester grading period. Progress reports are mailed home after the middle of each trimester. Parents can arrange additional progress reports through their student’s counselor.

GRADUATION

All students graduating in 2007 must have completed the required District and State courses and have a minimum of 68 credits for graduation. Beginning with the Class of 2008, students must have a minimum of 70 credits, pass the WASL, and complete community service requirements of 55 hours. The community service will be structured with five hours in the freshman year, ten hours in the sophomore year, and 20 hours each in the junior and senior years. These requirements must be met for a student to participate in the graduation ceremony.

HARASSMENT/SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Harassment is a class C felony. Harassment is defined as overt acts of prejudice or harassment related to a person’s race, color, gender, culture, or mental, physical, or sensory handicap. Harassment will result in immediate and serious consequences, which may include a referral to the district title IX officer and/or referral to local law authorities.

When a person (male or female) is subjected to unwelcome behavior that is sexual in nature, it is “sexual harassment” and is inappropriate, harmful, and against the law. WAC 392-190-056 defines sexual harassment to include conduct or communication involving adult to student, student to adult, student to student, adult to adult, male to female, female to male, male to male and female to female.

If a person feels uncomfortable, pressured, threatened, or in danger as a result of sexually related activity, then it is unwelcome and can constitute “harassment.” Specific behaviors (that are unwanted and sexual in nature) that could constitute sexual harassment include touching, verbal comments, sexual name calling, sexual rumors, inappropriate public display of affection, overly personal conversation, cornering/blocking, demeaning/belittling, jokes/cartoons/pictures, leers, pulling at clothes, and attempted rape/rape.

You have the right to say NO.

· If a person’s behavior makes you uncomfortable, it is important that you let them know.

· Tell the harasser that his or her advances are unwelcome and you want the advances to stop.

· Do not feel forced to submit just because the harasser is stronger or in a position of power.

You have the right to be treated with respect.

· Your response should be respected and accepted. There are people who believe a “no” is really a “yes” and therefore do not accept refusal.

You have the right to seek help and report the harassment.

· Keep notes of the harassment if it continues. Write down the time(s) and place(s) as well as behavior and statements made.

· Report the harassment.

· Talk to counselors or administrators for information and assistance.

HEALTH CONCERNS

Students who become ill during the school day should report to the main office. The school will contact the student’s parent/guardian or the emergency telephone number listed in the student’s file to obtain permission for the student to go home. A school nurse is not available, and students may only be housed in the office for a short duration.

HOMEWORK

A student’s daily homework will vary from grade level to class schedule. One to two hours each night is considered to be an average load. Students are expected to “quest for the best” in all of their classes. Those students who have advanced classes such as physics, chemistry, or advanced math can expect to devote more time to studies as the curriculum demands. Some of our teachers have homework assignments on their web page. Please use it if you can.

HONOR ROLL

Students receiving a 3.2 GPA or above (with no D, F, U or I grades) will be placed on the honor roll for that trimester.

Students who do not comply with these reasonable requests will be asked to leave and may be excluded from future use of the library.

LOST AND FOUND

The school cannot be responsible for losses. Therefore, we urge students to keep valuable items at home and mark all personal items. A lost and found box is located in the administrative office. At the end of the trimester, unclaimed items will be sent to the Tri-Area Community Center for donation to those in need.

MAKE-UP WORK

Make-up work is usually allowed for excused absences. In general, students have one day to make up work for each excused day of an absence. Work missed during unexcused absences cannot be made up.

Students are not allowed to make up work the last two weeks of a trimester, unless it is due to illness or prior arrangements have been made.

MEDICATION

School Board policy mandates that if a student must take prescribed medication in school, the medicine will be kept in the main office and the student will report to the office for dosage. The necessary paperwork may be picked up in the main office for this procedure. The school, by law, cannot give out any type of medication, including aspirin, without a medical release.

MESSAGES

The school will deliver messages to students only when deemed emergencies. Delivering other messages is disruptive to the educational process.

NEIGHBORHOOD

Chimacum High School wishes to maintain a good relationship with its neighbors. Community residents have a right to privacy and freedom from profane or abusive language and behavior. Students must not loiter, trespass, or create a nuisance for residents of our community. While Chimacum High School cannot be held responsible for the acts of students commuting to and from school, it may take disciplinary action if the circumstances warrant.

Schools have a responsibility to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Law violations affecting community members are reported. Therefore, students are prohibited from being in local neighborhoods except for the purpose of commuting between the school and another destination.

NUISANCE ITEMS

Radios, cassette decks, CD players, and nuisance items such as squirt guns, canned string, smoke bombs, non-tobacco chew, nonalcoholic beverages such as “O’Doul’s”, and look-alike controlled substances are prohibited from school grounds and may be confiscated. Those who choose to use profanity can expect to be addressed on this issue, and if it continues, to be disciplined, including suspension.

PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Public displays of affection such as prolonged hugging and kissing in school or on school grounds or at school-related activities are embarrassing to others, both students and adults. Repeated kissing or sitting on laps is inappropriate at school and will not be condoned. Couples who persist in these behaviors will first be warned. If another incident should occur, the parent/guardian will be contacted. If the behavior continues after the parent/guardian contact, students can expect discipline consequences for noncompliance of school rules.

RESPECT

Chimacum High School is proud of the respect members of its community (students, staff, parents, and patrons) display to each other. Behaviors such as theft, racist remarks, inappropriate language, harassment, intimidation, and sexual harassment are considered disrespectful and will not be tolerated on school grounds or at school-related activities.
