Graduation Requirements

The following units and subject areas of study shall be

required of each candidate for graduation.

As you are likely aware, the Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2008 and beyond have changed. There has been some confusion regarding this. Here is the latest information regarding what students must do to earn a diploma. New Note for Class of 2013.  New Graduation Requirements for Math.

Ø Earn 70 Credits in the following categories

Math (two different courses IMP 1 or higher)

Science

Social Studies (Civics 9, World History, US History, CWP)

Washington State History (or 8th grade completion by request)

Physical Education

Career and Technical Education

3

Fine and Performing Arts

Health

Portfolio Productions

Electives

To Graduate

Ø Complete 55 hours of community service

o 5 for freshmen

o 10 for sophomores

o 20 for juniors

o 20 for seniors

Ø Complete a “High School and Beyond Plan”

o Drafted freshman year as part of Portfolio Productions

o Revised annually during Advisory

Ø Complete a Senior Project, to include:

o Proposal (due in October)

o Paper: researching a component of the project

o Project itself

o Presentation (in March/April of senior year)

Ø Earn the Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA)

o Pass Reading WASL

o Pass Writing WASL

§ Alternatives for reading and writing include:

§ Pass PSAT, SAT or ACT (cut scores to be announced in December)

§ Complete a Collection of Evidence (See Ms. Meissner for information)

o Demonstrate proficiency in Math by one of the following methods:

§ Pass Math WASL

§ Pass PSAT-Math with score of 47 or higher

§ Pass SAT-Math with score of 470 or higher

§ Pass ACT-Math with score of 19 or higher

§ PASS AP Calculus or AP Statistics test with a score of 3 or higher

§ Complete a Collection of Evidence (see Ms. Meissner for info)

§ WASL/Grade comparison (must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher)

§ Note: Math proficiency requirement can be waived by earning an additional 3 credits (for seniors) or 6 credits (for juniors) in mathematics. Students will not earn the CAA but will be eligible to receive a high school diploma

* Washington State History is offered in the 8th grade. It is offered every other year in the High School.

** Senior Social Studies can be earned from CWP, and Psychology or Sociology, when offered.

Talk to the High School Counselor to find out the best option for you for the credits that you need.

Digital Learning Commons, this program is used at the FOCUS Alternative School and is also available for any other student at a charge of $100/1.5 credits. Available at www.learningcommons.org, you must register with the FOCUS Alternative Instructor at Chimacum High School.

BYU Independent Study High School Credit Program, $120/1.5 credits. Available at www.elearn.byu.edu or go to 1-800-914-8931.

Redcometwww.redcomet.org a credit retrieval online program, $125/1.5 credits, summer school $100/1.5 credits. They have a scholarship program for low income students.
