*** N E W*** Students and parents  you can check community service online.

Sign into Family Access; use your login and password.  Click on the “Test Scores” link on the left side of your screen under General Information.  From the list of tests choose “CS” and click on the show scores link.  These will be the completed community services and any hours that are in that are extra toward your next community service.  Community service should be done in the year that it is required.  Hope this helps you know where you are in completing community service requirements.

NHS STUDENTS – Please sign up in Miss Phillips’ room by Friday for food and beverages for our ice cream social next Wednesday at lunch. If you do not sign up, a food assignment will be made for you. Please see Hannah Spitzbart, Abbie Person, Jarrett Hansen or Miss Phillips if you have any questions.

STUDENTS – Spring Drama tryouts are Thursday at 5:30 in the auditorium.

STUDENTS – If you need to get a sport physical, you can get it at the school clinic. Parental consent is required, and forms are available on the health clinic page.

TENNIS GIRLS – There is a sign up sheet in the office.

STUDENTS – If you are interested in community service work at Gibbs Lake County Park, contact Kobi Albright.

SENIORS – It is time to start wrapping up your senior projects and preparing for your presentations. You must sign up in the office. Note that there are evening presentation times available.

STUDENTS – There are new dental clinic dates for students without dental insurance and students with DSHS dental insurance. Call 385-9400 or drop into the clinic for more information and to schedule an appointment. The dates are February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18.

STUDENTS – Show your friends or that special someone that you care by buying them a Valentine’s Day rose. Pre-sales are in the commons at lunch and go through February 11. Quantities are limited and prices go up on the 10th.

STUDENTS – Open field play is available Wednesdays and Thursdays at Irondale Park between the hours of 3:00 and 5:00.

STUDENTS – Ladies, start asking around for a date. Tolo: A night on the town is coming up. It is February 27th. Tickets are $10 for singles and $15 for a couple. Your attire should be dressy. Come and get your groove on.

STUDENTS – Spring sports practice begins March 1. Be sure you have all your paperwork in, including a current physical, and the extra form for that particular sport, so you will be eligible for the first day of practice.

TIP OF THE WEEK – Electronic devices have been the source of serious student conflicts and tremendous disruption to the educational process. Items such as cell phones (calls during class, text messages, inappropriate or unwanted photographs), iPods, MP3 players, computers, etc., need to be used appropriately at appropriate times. If students ask and are given permission, then many problems can be avoided. Consequences for violation of this policy are as follows:

1st offense: Device will be confiscated and sent to the office. Student may pick up device from the office at the end of the class period.

2nd offense: One Friday School. Device will be confiscated and sent to the office. Student may pick up device at the end of the day.

3rd offense: Two Friday Schools. Device will be confiscated and sent to the office. Parent conference required. Parent must pick up the device.

4th offense: Three day suspension. Device will be confiscated and sent to the office. Parent conference required. Parent must pick up the device.

STUDENTS – There is a Seattle Spring College Fair Saturday, March 6, at Seattle University’s Connolly Center, 12:00-3:00pm. Over 120 colleges and universities from across the country will be participating.

STUDENTS – The US Naval Academy offers a Summer Seminar. This fast-paced, six-day experience is for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. The Summer Seminar teaches you about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation’s leaders. If you think you may be interested in pursuing an appointment to one of the nation’s service academies and serving your country as an officer, you should seriously consider attending the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar. STUDENTS – Would you like to visit Evergreen State College? Attend a “Fridays at Evergreen” event. You get to meet current students, staff and faculty, get a tour of the campus and have a chance to learn more about the college. Dates are February 12 and 19 from 10:00am to 12:30pm. SCHOLARSHIPS

Cascade Warbirds Scholarship Programs (Private Pilot Ground School Scholarship): Cascade Warbirds has teamed with Wing Aloft of Boeing Field, Seattle, to provide the scholarship recipient with tuition, books and supplies and two introductory flights. Successful completion of this Private Pilot Ground School will qualify the student to take the FFA’s Private Pilot Written Exam.

EAA Air Venture Aviation Camp in Oshkosh, Wisconsin: Cascade Warbirds has teamed with the Experimental Aircraft Association of Oshkosh, WI, to provide the tuition for the EAA’s Advanced Air Academy (summer camp). This camp provides an atmosphere for mature students to become totally immersed in the world of flight. The scholarship covers both tuition and room and board for the session. Students must be 16, 17 or 18 at the time of the camp (summer 2010). This award also includes a travel allowance to Oshkosh of up to $250.

The Port Townsend Arts Guild is offering art scholarships for graduating seniors who are residents of Jefferson County. Awards will be based on originality, leadership and merit. The arts supported include two and three dimensional visual arts, dance, theatre, literature, music and photography. See Ms. Fogerson in the counseling office for an application. (3/31/10)

Jefferson Healthcare Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund is accepting applications for the scholarship awards from February 1 through April 1.Applications may be obtained from Jefferson Healthcare’s Human Resources Department or by calling the Human Resources Department at 385-2200 ext 2082. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 75 hours with Jefferson Healthcare’s Volunteer Services at the time of the award. For information about volunteering, contact Marsha Goldman at 385-2200 ext 2013 or Beki Lischalk at ext 2089.

JUNIORS – A scholarship for you! The Nordstrom Scholarship Program is open to current high school juniors who reside in Washington and Alaska. To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria: Have a cum GPA of at least 2.7, be a high school junior, have participated in community volunteer activities, be planning to apply for financial assistance to attend college, be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the United States. STUDENTS – The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group proudly sponsors The Stream Team Internship Program. Here is an opportunity to work directly in the stream systems of the Hood Canal Watershed, gain valuable hands-on field experience while making a positive impact on Wild Salmon ecosystems. Upon completion of the paid summer internship, the participant will receive a $2500 scholarship towards the college of their choice. Applications for the internship are available in the counseling office.

The Port Townsend Garden Club is offering a $500 scholarship to promote the study of the environment and related fields such as forestry, landscaping, conservation, agriculture, floral design and others. The scholarship is open to residents of Jefferson County who are graduating seniors in high school who are planning to attend a two or four-year college or vocational program or adults seeking further training in the area specified. The Washington Association of School Administrators and PEMCO Foundations of the 21st Century Educators Scholarship – Any high school senior in Washington State who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0, exhibits leadership in a wide variety of activities and intends to pursue a career in education is encouraged to apply. Applications are available from Ms. Fogerson in the counseling office. (3/15/10)

The Port Ludlow Computer Club offers scholarships for Jefferson County High School seniors who plan to enroll in a college or university in the coming fall and pursue a Degree in Technology (Computer Science, Computer Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, and Telecommunications). The High School Technology Scholarships are awarded to first time college freshmen for one year and may be renewable for a second year based on performance and availability. To qualify, the student must be a graduating Jefferson County high school student, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit the complete PLCC Scholarship Application. WSECU (Washington State Employees Credit Union) will award 20 scholarships for $2,000 each to recipients attending a four-year or graduate school, and seven scholarships of $1,000 each to students studying at a two-year or vocational school. The Bremerton Valley of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is once again proud to offer scholarships to graduating students who are attending college in the fall. To qualify, you must have a GPA of at least 3.2 and complete the application which they supply. Scholarship recipients are required to participate in the Special Awards Presentation at the Masonic Temple in Bremerton on the evening of May 28th. The Washington State School Retirees’ Association is pleased to invite senior students to apply for the Robert J Handly (PEMCO-Foundation, Inc) Scholarships and the WSSU-Foundation Scholarships. There are 25 scholarships to be awarded. Each year WSSRA selects outstanding high school seniors who are committed to entering the teaching profession (Classroom teacher, school counselor, school nurse, communication disorder specialist, school physical therapist, school psychologist, reading specialist, librarian, etc) to receive these scholarships. PEMCO scholarships are $900 each and renewable for a total of four years. The WSSR-Foundation scholarships are for $1,500 for one year only. Sea Mar Community Health Centers (Clinica de la Comunidad) is awarding $1,000 scholarships to students of migrant or seasonal farm worker families. Sea Mar encourages all students who qualify to apply. If you do not have a high GPA but would like to attend a college or vocational program, please consider applying for this scholarship. SEATTLE MARINERS WOMEN’S CLUB (SMWC) will present the “Bev and West Stock Scholarship” to a deserving athlete who displays good character both on and off the playing field, no matter what sport. The scholarship will be presented to a graduating high school senior who is planning to pursue an athletic-related career and will be attending a college or university in the coming academic year. The R. H. Thomson Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Seattle Section, American Society of Civil Engineers, is pleased to announce that a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded for the 2010/2011 school year for applicants who will be pursuing a Bachelor or Master of Science degree in the field of Professional Civil Engineering (inclusive of currently accepted specialties, such as structural, environmental or hydraulic engineering). Washington State PTA is awarding $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships to graduates of Washington State public high schools beginning their freshman year of post-secondary education. These scholarships are for attending 4-year or 2-year colleges, as well as vocational-technical schools. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of 1) financial need, 2) academic performance and 3) leadership/community service. The application form is available on the Washington State PTA website at http://www.wastatepta.org/programs/scholarships/index.html. This application form is the only one that will be accepted. The Kelly Foundation of Washington offers the Ewing C. Kelly Scholarship – high school seniors are eligible. Applicants will be judged on citizenship and academic achievement. The Christian Connector provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2,500 Christian College scholarship drawing.  Students can simply log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and be entered in the scholarship drawing.

Whitworth University has several academic scholarships available for new 2009-2010 undergraduate students, ranging from $7,000 to $14,000 per year.  These are renewable scholarship, meaning you can get them renewed each year if you maintain satisfactory academic progress while enrolled full time at Whitworth. EIGHTH ANNUAL NATIONAL CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Commission for Cooperative Education, on behalf of the eight NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities, is pleased to announce and sponsor its Eighth Annual National Co-op Scholarship Program. As the largest independently sponsored merit co-op scholarship program in the United States, the National Commission will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, for a total renewable value of $4,200,000. Washington State Elks offers the 2009-2010 Vocational Grants. There are 32 Grants from $900 to $1500 for qualified applicants.  This scholarship is for Washington state students who plan to pursue an eligible vocational/technical course of study.  More information in the Counseling office, your local Elks Lodge, or at www.waelks.net (2/26/10)
